Story

Great ideas…
for some reason, usually appear when something goes wrong. That’s exactly what happened to the creator of PLYLAND, Helen Teigar, during her furniture design studies. While preparing a competition piece with a bent plywood detail, the element unexpectedly broke. Lacking the original material, she had to improvise quickly and creatively. By alternating layers of two different shades of wood veneer, she achieved a surprisingly intriguing result. A few days later, when she came across a traditional Estonian folk skirt in her closet, inspiration struck: the idea of creating plywood with colourful layers was born.
Of course, having an idea is one thing, bringing it to life is another. During her experiments, Helen discovered that it was not at all easy to dye thin layers of wood evenly, as the wood acted like a filter that blocked the color particles from going beneath the surface.
To solve this problem, Helen carried out in-depth research as part of her thesis “Colourful Plywood Inspired by Striped Folk Skirts”. She designed specialized dyeing equipment, developed the colourful plywood material concept, and presented it publicly for the first time in 2014 for an element of the lectern for the Estonian National Museum.
The company Triibuvineer OU was officially founded on March 30th 2015 in Estonia. That same summer, we started to develop a workshop and a production facility on a small UNESCO island of Hiiumaa. From the very beginning, we’ve been committed to the environment: choosing eco-friendly materials, sustainable processes, and keeping our footprint as light as possible.
In 2020 we launched a new brand name PLYLAND at Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair.
Today, PLYLAND blends craftsmanship, sustainability, and cultural heritage into timeless products with a story to tell.
The world of PLYLAND is colourful and sustainable

The world is not black and white – it is filled with an endless spectrum of colours, tones, and nuances. We believe this richness is what makes life exciting and gives every experience its own unique character. One thing, however, is certain: we have only one planet Earth. It provides us with an abundant, diverse, and vibrant environment to live in, and it is our shared responsibility to protect it.
From the very beginning, PLYLAND has been developed with deep respect for the environment. Our goal is not to add disposable products to the world – items that quickly end up as waste – but to create high-quality, long-lasting solutions that are made to endure.
